Web Reaches New Milestone - 100 Million Sites

Have you ever sat back and ever wondered what was actually the first web site that was ever created. As the internet grows, most people think that websites and the internet have been around forever. It actually wasn’t that long ago but in internet years it is probably an eternity. The first website that was ever created was a site about sharing high energy particle physics data. It was created in 1989.
There are now 100 million Web sites with domain names and content on them," said Netcraft's Rich Miller. (Watch as the Web gave birth to the virtual self -- 2:44)
"Within that, there are some that are busy and updated more often, and that represents the active sites, which are at about 47 or 48 million," he said.
Bloggers, small businesses, and simplicity have combined to create the dramatic growth of sites, much of it just in the past two years.
