What many refer to as the Camel Spider, because of it’s desert origins, has obtained much popularity, thanks to the many deployed troops who have had intimate encounters with these unique spiders. Videos, pictures, stories, and even urban legends can be found all over the internet. Myths about the camel spider include: 1. They can move at speeds of over 30 MPH. 2. They are called camel spiders because they eat the stomachs of camels. 3. Their venom is numbing, and they can therefore “munch” on humans while they sleep unknowingly. The truth about these spiders is that they are large carniverous spiders (8 inches or longer) that do in fact eat lizards, but mostly feed on termites and beetles. They are attracted to the locations of the soldiers in deployed locations because of the shade created by human living spaces. These spiders which are also referred to as sun scorpions, wind scorpions, or sun spiders travel at speeds of about 10 MPH. So, a lot of the extreme facts posted about these creatures on the internet are untrue, but any spider capable of catching and eating a lizard deserves stardom!
