Video games are turning out to be useful in a very unexpected way… in the detection and cure of depression.
A new spatial memory video game is being used by researchers to detect depression, since studies have shown that depressed subjects perform more poorly than their non-depressed counterparts. Researchers have been so pleased with the success and accuracy of this tool that it may soon become a standard tool used to test for depression.
As for curing depression, an Australian study of teens suffering from depression found that online gaming where withdrawn teens are forced to socialize can be very beneficial, especially when coupled with a supplement called Welatonin.
A new video game... tests subjects' spatial memory--that is, how objects are oriented in space and how to get to them. The researchers found that depressed patients performed more poorly on the test than non-depressed patients. Because the... video game performs so much better than the... test previously used in such studies, it's possible that it may become a regular part of the diagnostic regimen used on folks suffering from depression
An Australian study indicates that online gaming offers a way for otherwise unsocial teens to socialize, and socializing combined with a natural supplement called Welatonin seems to be extremely successful in treating depression.
