The Office of Naval Research has developed a new Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming robot. Known better as BUG, the boat-cleaning ‘bot will keep a ship’s hull free of barnacles, oysters and other marine life. Keeping the ship free of such sea creatures will decrease fuel consumption by up to 40% and increase speed by 10%. The BUG will have sensors which will allow it to avoid major obstacles. The Navy hopes a BUG fleet will be ready by 2015, thus saving around $500 million in maintenance costs while keeping American ships so fresh and so clean. References: robots.netFiled In: |
