The City of Delft has just purchased a quiet, emission-free, load-hauling bicycle from Onno Sminia and Louis Pierre Geerinckx. These student designers are also entrepreneurs who created the Vrachtfiets. The pedal-powered cargo bike is capable of hauling heavier than normal loads because it includes not only a soon-to-be solar-powered electrical assist, but it allows two people to provide its foot power.

The Vrachtfiets is built of lightweight materials with modern suspension that updates the Netherlands’ traditional cargo bike, which is based on an early 20th century design. The designers hope that this bike can be used to do things like move furniture, a task that other cargo bikes cannot do easily.
