As the impact of the recession continues to make its presence felt, fashion takes inspiration from a new financial landscape. Trash can couture, which sees designers literally raiding the bin, represents a new take on fashionable upcycling.

Simon Rasmussen drew from this mentality in his Spring Summer 2011 collection, stuffing puffas with fabric and plastic bags, and by embellishing oversized coats with newspaper, cheese garters and plastic cups. Burnt denim and coats created from reappropriated quilts completed the look, cocooning the wearer in a soft and protective shelter that provides a new urban hermit.
