Project Protégé was created in Italy through the vision of Franca Sozzani, Editor of Vogue Italia; an idea that sees some of fashion’s most prominent figures identify and mentor promising, talented protégés over the months leading up to the launch of their collections. Designer Kristian Aadnevik, selected by Donatella Versace to take part in the project, showcased some uniquely original designs at the recent fashion week, all of which reminded Trend de la Creme of Anna’s Hummingbirds.
Amidst the sea of tropical brights and gothy blacks, Kristian Aadnevik's designs for The Protégé Collection really stood out at Australia Fashion Week. Not just because he took bold design risks, but because his pieces reminded me of one of my favorite birds -- the Anna's Hummingbird.
Male Anna's Hummingbirds (named after Anna Masséna, Duchess of Rivoli) are known for their pinkish-red shimmering crowns while the female variety are best know for their golden details and complex feather patterns. A native to the Pacific Coast, Anna's Hummingbirds are also unique because they sing during courtship, wooing their partners with explosive squeaks.
Suffice it to say, I let out an explosive squeak when I saw The Protégé Collection hit the runway. Both eclectic and dark, it's shimmering details and complex patterns definitely caught my attention.
