By breaking Olympian Mark Spitz’s 7-gold performance at the 1972 Munich Games, 23-year-old swimmer Michael Phelps from Baltimore won 8 gold Olympic medals at this year’s Beijing Olympics, making him the greatest Olympian of all time.

His powerful butterfly gave the American team the lead in the 400-meter medley relay on Sunday morning, marking the eighth gold for five individual races and three relays in Beijing.

As Phelps took his photos with his teammate on the deck, the announcer said “The Beijing Olympics has witnessed the greatest Olympian of all time - Michael Phelps of the USA,”
