The iPod - What exactly is the trend?

Can one product be a trend? No. It can’t. Can many spin off components be a trend? Well, not really. But the idea behind them all is. The real iPod trend is that we now can stylishly and conveniently have music everywhere. But the actual trend, the thing this site hunts down and shows to other like minded people, has changed. I think the iPod is now a trend in itself. Look through the archives...how many iPod related products can you see? Many is the answer. The iPod has done what every consumer focused corporation wants, transcended itself from a product into a trend, an entire industry. In 2006 one of the biggest selling items in Australia where iPod speakers. There are non Apple sanctioned products everywhere. One single product is not a trend, as Nigel Goodwin said in his trend hunter interview, “In my mind, a trend is an emerging idea, development, interest, tendency, behavior or innovation that has the potential to shape the future.” So unless the iPod accessory realllly lets me do something I could never do before (like the Nike JV) it’s not a trend. All these spin offs aren’t trends, they’re just adapted technologies for the iPod....the FM/AM radio toilet paper dispenser was a Xmas gift in the 1980’s!!!
