Historic Shea Stadium Dismantled in Favor of All-New Citi Field

Today, Shea Stadium in New York City has joined the nostalgic ranks of Ebbets Field, Washington Park, Polo Grounds, and Hilltop Park. It is officially closed and dismantled. Most of the seats and memorabilia have been sold to fans.

“The last remaining part of the ballpark, the section 5 ramp, was knocked down at 11:25 a.m.” said New York Mets spokesman, Ethan Wilson.

Not only does Shea Stadium have great nostalgic value to baseball fans, who remember the League Division, Championship, and World Series Games that were won there, but it also played host to soccer and NFL football games and many concerts, including a famous Beatles appearance in 1965.

Among other music stars, who appeared at Shea were Janis Joplin, Paul Simon, Steppenwolf, The James Gang, Miles Davis, Tom Paxton, and John Sebastian.

It will be sadly missed by fans, as it becomes a parking lot for Citi Field, an $800 million stadium that opens in April.

The ballpark was named after William Shea, a lawyer who helped return National League baseball to New York after the Giants and Dodgers migrated to California for the 1958 season. It is survived by the Mets, who are moving to Citi Field, and the Jets, who moved to Giants Stadium after the 1983 NFL season. (comcast.net)

This makes me sad. I got sad when Yankee Stadium got torn down, and the Vet in Philly, too. I understand that after decades of use, these fields get worn down, but there's so much history... Like historic buildings, these should similarly be preserved for future generations of sports fans.
