Foster + Partners belong to the world’s most famous architectural firms, so when they announce new projects, we know the result will be great. Their heavy emphasis on sustainable building continues as they revealed plans for The Bow, a new green skyscraper in Calgary, AB. If the proportions of the graphic designs are accurate, the new building will be the tallest and widest of all the Canadian city’s skyscrapers, and with its shiny steel exterior, the flashiest as well. It’s actually this use of steel that plays a huge factor in the structure’s environmentally-friendly qualifications as it results in a 30% reduction in core structural materials. “The new EnCana headquarters building, The Bow, will be the first significant mixed-use development east of Centre Street in downtown Calgary,” Foster + Partners explains. “Providing an environmentally sustainable headquarters for one of Canada’s leading corporations, the design will create a generous social space for Calgary, offering a new cultural, civic and shopping destination.” The building, set for completion in 2010, will be sectioned into designated commercial, residential, and retail areas. It will also feature internal green space as well as a large south-facing atrium. It’s the bow-shape of the tower’s top as well as its situation on the Bow River that likely earned the building its name. “Running the entire height of the façade, this passive solar space will absorb the sun’s energy to warm the tower in cold Calgary winters,” Inhabitat says. “The mixed-use scheme of The Bow tower offers up a model of sustainable urban living without even leaving the premise. Even so, we suggest residents and visitors step outside in one of the cleanest cities in the world, renowned as an ecotourism destination.” This is incredible, and I look forward to seeing this myself next time I’m in the city. Calgary is booming, and as a result, the city centre is being plagued by a continuous outpour of smog and pollution. Having a structure like this to counteract the beautiful blue skies is a fantastic initiative. References: inhabitatFiled In: |
