TEST FLIGHT---Hydrogen Powered Plane
Developed by one of the aviation giants, Boeing, the small hydrogen-powered aircraft soared high in the skies of Spain. The plane had three short flights in an airfield south of Madrid.
The flying time was 45 minutes but the company limited the test to half that time.
The successful launched was said to put a promise on a greener future with only heat and water as exhaust products. The flight was made possible by what they call ‘fuel cells’ that combines oxygen and hydrogen that produces electricity to power the electric motor coupled into a propeller.
While the plane is aboard, it depends entirely on the fuel cells but when it takes off, the planes’ battery are adding additional boosts to the engine.
However, though successful, the firm said that it does not believe that fuel cells could be a major source to power larger passenger aircrafts though it can be used as a secondary source of energy for larger planes.
Nieves Lapene, the engineer responsible for the test flights said that he’s seeing about 20 years for the entire development if fuel cells can be used for larger planes.
