So much of the Olymic image is tied up in the five rings and the torch. Accordingly, designing the Olympic Torch has become a designers dream.

It is interesting to note that the designer of the Beijing Olympic torch is not getting credit. The designer is Lenovo, the makers of the Think Pad for IBM.

The New York Times has a wonderful interactive graphic on their website showing the evolution and transition of Olympic torches from both summer and winter games from 1936 until the present.

The gallery here shows just ten of the torches, but you have to be struck by the originality and thought that went into the design of each torch.

I've always been awe struck by the torches... My fav was the bow-and-arrow torch in Barcelona... I've added the video.
