The long-awaited, much-delayed Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world, will hit the streets in July 2009. Expectations are that the 100,000 rupee ($1,980) car will be a smash when the affordable auto starts to ship.

There are currently so many orders for the TaTa Nano that purchasers will be randomly selected between 4/9 and 4/25 in India. A European model will be launched by 2011, while the U.S. will be impatiently waiting.

The TaTa Nano was announced over a year ago, but hit production delays. There is concern that the Nano will only add to India’s already choking environmental problems.

Questions like, "Is it a proper car?" can be dismissed once and for all. Getting in and out of the Nano is easier than in an Mercedes S-class and that's no exaggeration. The doors open wide and high seats allow you to slide onto them with the utmost ease. For a car that weighs a mere 600kg, the Nano feels incredibly robust. You expect the doors to rattle, the seats to squeak and those dinner-plate sized wheels to buckle driving over rough Indian roads. But instead, the Nano feels rigid. (engadget)

If the Tato Nano becomes really popular, it will be neat to see the innovative ways people come up with to 'pimp' their Nanos to stand out from the rest.

I'm not sure the people of India are into pimping their Tata Nanos, but if they are, a vinyl skin like a tiger would be awesome??? ah, not so much.

Cool idea! If I had to pimp mine, it would have a black line above the front headlights, like liquid liner, with fake eyelashes, then lipstick around the license plate... LOL, that way I'd never have to worry about a guy borrowing my car!

I would totally get one if I had access to it. I'd paint it pink, add rhinestone hubcaps, and zebra print seat covers . . .
