Made with Natural Rubber
There are two main types of rubber used to make flip-flops, natural and synthetic. SWAMISZ are made using renewable resource, high-grade natural rubber. The rubber is produced from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). So although SWAMISZ don’t really grow on trees, they are the next closest thing.

To make more natural rubber your need to plants more trees, which is always a good thing, as trees absorb atmospheric CO2. The rubber trees help offset the CO2 emissions released during the manufacturing process. This is good.

Synthetic rubbers, on the other hand, are non-renewable, petrochemical products. The manufacture of synthetic rubbers contributes to the depletion of dwindling oil reserves and releases considerable CO2, contributing to global warming. This is not good.

Rubber trees farmed to make SWAMISZ live to around 25 years. Once the trees have reached the end of their rubber-producing life cycle the remaining rubber sap is extracted from the wood. The milled wood is sought after to make quality furniture. Meanwhile, a future generation of cute young rubber trees are growing up in their place.

Even the rubber off-cuts are shaved down and recycled to make lower-grade natural rubber products. SWAMISZ come in reusable, hand-stencilled, cotton tote bags and have recycled card tags. Nothing gets wasted. Good for your feet. Great for the planet.

SWAMISZ are modeled on ancient Indian wooden shoes named ‘Paduka’. Dating back over 5000 years ‘Paduka’ are one of the earliest forms of footwear invented and are said to be worn by the Gods.  ‘Paduka’ are traditionally worn during ceremonies by India’s Swamis; respected, enlightened masters of self- realization*. Many Swamis walk barefoot most of the time. They often walk hundreds of kilometres on pilgrimage. Naturally, feet get sore with this much walking. When some Swamis found out about SWAMISZ, they got in touch and asked if they could have some made in orange to match their robes. Many Indian Swamis now walk a little easier in their Swami Orange SWAMISZ. They say wearing SWAMISZ is as close to walking barefoot as you can get.
