A new study conducted by a team led by Dr. Bahman Guyuron of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland reveals some interesting results regarding lifestyle and keeping a youthful appearance. Guyuron’s team of plastic surgeons who study faces for a living conducted this study at the Annual Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio. The team studied twins and compared their lifestyles in an effort to show the affects of varied lifestyles on the age appearance of people with the same genetic make-up.

The study yielded some expected results: smokers and those who tan often age more quickly. A not-so-surprising result was that those with a higher divorce rate looked older as well. The surprising find is that adding a few pounds actually makes you look younger.

The full results of the Twin Study is set to be published in the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The bottom line, though, as you get older, is to think about adding a few pounds.

Guyuron doesn't recommend that people gain weight just to look younger, and one limitation of his study is that the Twinsburg photos included only faces. If they had showed the whole body, the judges may have knocked a couple of years from the age estimates of those who had kept a youthful figure - and added a couple of years for those who were well-fed in the middle. Interesting... I think the reason people look younger is because their wrinkles are filled in with fat. In general, hollow faces tend to look old so I buy that theory kind of. HOWEVER, I find that people under 40 look OLDER when they are overweight; obese people under 25 always look at least 10 years older. The downside is that weight loss leads to excess skin, which again looks like wrinkles. Interesting study, Carl.
