30 ‘Star Trek’ and Fantasy Island Luxuries - Commemorating the Life of Ricardo Montalban (CLUSTER)
Commemorating the Life of Ricardo Montalban

Ricardo Montalban has died at the age of 88, leaving behind a body of work that spans several areas of pop culture. One of the iconic lines Admiral James T. Kirk delivered, “Kaaaaahhhhhhnnnnnn!” is known to all, not just Trekkies. Another famous line delivered by Montalban paid off handsomely: Richardo Montalban was a pitchman for the “rich Corinthian leather” that adorned the Chrysler car line.

Ricardo Montalban was born in Mexico and had worked for more than 65 years in L.A. He won an Emmy for his work in ‘How the West Was Won,’ and Montalban also was given the lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild. Ricardo Montalban also appeared in the hit farce “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.” He was a star on stage, getting a Tony nomination for best actor in the 1957 musical “Jamaica.” He also toured playing Don Juan in “Don Juan In Hell.”

To celebrate Ricardo Montalban’s achievements and body of work, here are some ‘Star Trek’-inspired products and fantasy island luxuries.

"Fantasy Island" received high ratings for most of its run on ABC, and still appears in reruns. Mr. Roarke and his sidekick, Tattoo, played by the 3-foot, 11-inch Herve Villechaize, reached the state of TV icons. Villechaize died in 1993. In a 1978 interview, Montalban analyzed the series's success: "What is appealing is the idea of attaining the unattainable and learning from it. Once you obtain a fantasy, it becomes a reality, and that reality is not as exciting as your fantasy. Through the fantasies you learn to appreciate your own realities." As for Mr. Roarke: "Was he a magician? A hypnotist? Did he use hallucinogenic drugs? I finally came across a character that works for me. (trendhunter)

Sixty, this cluster was a brilliant way to touch upon such a sad subject. I've love Ricardo since I was a little girl. We're not "trekkies" in the geek form but Star Trek 2 was our favorite. I'll never forget these words spoken by Ricardo's Kahn character: "From hell's heart I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee!"

@Sandra: ohhh, that was a GREAT line. I'm having second thoughts about the image. It's a Star Trek coffin, but of course with Spock's face. Thots? Anybody else please weigh in too.
