Staircase Shoe Drawers - Unicraft Joinery
[Edit]
People who live in small houses know that storage space is a premium. These staircase drawers are a neat and handy solution to shoe storage especially if the staircase is located in the foyer and the stairs are used as a place to sit on whilst putting on shoes. The idea comes from Unicraft Joinery based in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia (no website) and has been featured in an issue of the Australian Vogue Living magazine. The Canadian Home Workshop website has instructions for DIY handymen. It might be an idea to make them self-closing and keep the staircase well lit for safety reasons.
Drawers in stairs are not a new idea. The Japanese used to have beautiful handmade wooden stepped cabinets with side drawers for people to go up and down between floors. They are called kaidan tansu and are highly sought after antiques today.
