Invitation Sparks Price Tag Speculation[Edit]

Earlier this week, Apple distributed invitations to a special event on October 14th in Cupertino at Apple’s headquarters. Gizmodo wonders, “How do we know it’s about MacBook? Well, take a look at the image,” so it looks like it’s about time to save money for a new shiny gadget. According to Wired, however, you might not have to save up as much money as you would for a typical Apple MacBook. Hot and heavy rumors published in the technology magazine yesterday allege that Apple is planning to unveil a sub-$1,000 laptop intended primarily for Internet surfing.  Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he was confident that Apple would be releasing a sub-$1,000 notebook. He pointed out that in Apple's last quarterly earnings call, the company hinted at a "product transition" that would allow Apple to deliver "state-of-the-art new products that our competitors aren't going to be able to match." Munster said this translates to Apple releasing a product that's significantly lower priced than the existing ones in order to hit its gross margin guidance.
