Southwest Airlines’ ‘Green Plane’ is a refurbished a Boeing 737-700 that will serve as test lab of eco-friendly products and practices.

Among the materials that the Green Plane will test are 100% recyclable carpet squares that eliminate the need for full replacement as well as two different weight-reducing sustainable seat cover materials—discarded leather shavings, e-Leather and synthetic IZIT Leather.

The environmentally-friendly prototype will add an on-board recycling program November 1.

When passengers view Southwest Airlines new environmentally friendly Boeing 737-700 prototype for the first time there’s a good chance they will be driven to channel Hervé Villechaize’s Paradise Island character, Tattoo, and exclaim, “Green Plane! Green Plane!” The budget airline announced their plans for creating the verdant vehicle at its annual media day on October 21. The main aim of the plane is to reduce weight savings by almost five pound per seat, thus saving fuel and reducing emissions (interiordesign.net)
