Solar Reserve is a massive visual installation, put together by Irish artist John Gerrard, that aims to simulate a solar thermal tower and the desert landscape that surrounds it. The installation manifests in the form of a 28 x 24 foot frameless LED wall situated on the Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza.
The Solar Reserve installation mimics the solar site's 10,000 mirrors which reflect sunlight to the tower to heat molten salts, creating a thermal battery that is then utilized to generate electricity. The installation changes in real time throughout the day, mimicking the movements of the sun, moon and stars in the sky in an accurate manner.
The virtual world comprising the installation was created using a high-tech video game engine.
