As much as little girls love to dress up Barbies or mutilate them, Barbie always has represented pure fun or pure evil. Mattel has sometimes gotten the two confused, like in 1965 when Slumber Party Barbie came out with Barbie holding a book that was called “How to Lose Weight” and the contents were “Don’t eat.”

Or in 1992, when Teen Talk Barbie announced that “math is hard.” Ken, the man/boy doll, was a hit as Earring Magic Ken. This was followed by Oreo Barbie.

As Mattel was patting themselves on the back for a wheelchair-bound friend for Barbie, a girl in a wheelchair realized that the Barbie Dream House was not wheelchair-friendly. In 2003, Barbie was banned in Saudi Arabia until “Fulla” Barbie was released.
