'Smoking Women' is a photo series that provides a glimpse into the lives of aging sex workers. The series is the work of Spanish photographier Camilla de Maffei. In de Maffei's native Barcelona, prostitution is very taboo and sex workers are labeled as lost or shameful when in reality many of them are forced to turn to the industry by difficult personal circumstances.
Whether these women work as prostitutes for their entire lives or for a brief period of time, their work leaves a permanent mark on them.
By capturing the women as well as their personal possessions, the Smoking Women photo series reminds viewers of these forgotten women, most of whom hide away from society due to fear of being judged and scorned. However, it also serves as a wider exploration of womanhood, sexuality and the female body.
