That advertising dream is over now for recording companies and pop stars alike. Now, illegal downloads along with immediate online buy-ability mean that cover bands (no matter their quality) can beat the original artist to the punch. ‘She Wolf’ doesn’t make Shakira the first artist to be scooped by covers of their own song.
Low-priced technology has made producing music a much easier venture now. On the one hand, great artists can get started earlier and without studio backing. On the other, cover bands can swoop in on the success of pop hits like ‘She Wolf,’ and give Shakira and her online revenue a run for their money.
