Performance artist Alice Newstead had herself impaled on shark hooks and hung from the ceiling of the Lush cosmetics shop in London’s Regent’s Street. She did it to protest against the inhumane treatment sharks receive when their fins are harvested for soup and for alleged cancer cures. Sharks are caught with hooks, their fins sliced off and then dumped back into the ocean, still alive. Their numbers are rapidly dwindling. Several species have been reduced by 9o% since 1970. The crowds outside the shop watched as blood trickled down her back but she said, “I have had my torso, legs, arms, stomach and knees pierced before so that I could hang from them, so this is no big deal.” She is part of a group called Constant Elevation who all practice the art of hanging from hooks. She added, “Being hung from the chest is more painful than the back because it restricts your breathing, but as long as the piercer knows what they are doing then it is completely safe.” The video shows the actual performance.
