Secret Apartment - Hidden Home in a Mall (VIDEO) [Edit]

For the past four years, an artist who was not homeless has been occupying secret apartment that he built within a mall.  The 750 square foot hidden home was located in a niche space that was used for storage during the mall’s construction.

The artist, who often occupied the space, had ambitions to continue developing.  Although the space lacked a washroom, he wanted to create a luxury property… until he was finally caught.  He notes, “Plans to finish the kitchen, install the wood flooring, add a second bedroom and replace the outdated cutlery were put on permanent hold recently as I was apprehended leaving the apartment.”

Once discovered, the hidden apartment, located in Providence Place Mall, was closed down.  The apartment has its own website at trummerkind.com.  Trummerkind is a German word for ‘children of the ruins’, which refers to the children who lost their families during the war, forced to grow up in a society that required repair.

Now the project has come to an end, leaving the artist to reflect, “We learned a lot from living at the mall; it had become a lifestyle in the pursuit of lifestyle itself.” He also joked, “During the Christmas season of 2003 and 2004, radio ads for the Providence Place Mall featured an enthusiastic female voice talking about how great it would be if you (we) could live at the mall.”

The Apartment in the Mall was never intended to be specifically an ‘art’ piece, it was a home, an escape and an oasis away from a significant task that was consuming my life at the time. During the four years that we were building and living in the mall, my days were consumed by the creation of a memorial for all those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center. Starting the week after September 11th, we began drawing the portraits of every single firemen and airline passenger on the buildings of Manhattan, life-size with tape. The 500 portraits, and their corresponding web pages took over five years to finish. It involved over 30,000 hours of computer time making the website and was completely unfunded. (trummerkind)
