Scientists Create Embryonic Stem Cells Using Mice

Scientists from Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and Japan’s Kyoto University have programmed cells in mice to emulate embryonic stem cells. This research has excited the scientific community, which claims that researchers are close to making it work with human cells as well.
Researchers are also encouraging developing other embryonic stem cell techniques, however, considering President Bush’s history of vetoing Federal funding for research involving a human embryo; the current discovery seems most promising.
 Scientists say they have developed a method in mice for creating the equivalent of embryonic stem cells without using eggs or destroying an embryo, a finding that could help circumvent the controversy surrounding the promising research.
The finding, which was published online by Nature, comes as the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill relaxing restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research and a separate bill that would authorize cloning for therapeutic purposes.
