A nude image of a model bearing a strong resemblance to the Virgin Mary is gracing the December 2008 cover of the Mexican issue of Playboy Magazine. This controversial cover prompted a swift apology from Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. Sexy model Maria Florencia Onori is portrayed standing and striking a virginal pose while wearing a long white veil. The model’s background is represented by stained glass, which is very similar to the colored and stained glass found in Catholic churches. Meanwhile, the magazine’s tagline does little to refute the connection between Onori and the Virgin Mary: “Te adoramos Maria” (or “we worship you Maria”). This provocative and highly controverted cover comes hot on the heels of the annual pilgrimage to the huge Basilica (church) of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the northern part of Mexico City.  Gossip website TMZ has of course gotten involved and received a statement from The President of the Catholic League saying:
“Playboy’s juxtaposition of the sacred with the profane is a game that many have played, but to exploit Catholicism and insult Latinos in the same breath is novel. The December cover of its Mexican edition demonstrates once again that when it comes to good taste, Playboy remains quintessentially virginal.
