A car robotics research platform dubbed ‘RoboCar’ is being released by ZMP Inc. The platform is intended as an education and research tool for exploring the technical aspects of car robotics. The little robots will be made available to researchers, universities, and businesses interested in solving problems related to automobile robotics. The 1/10-scale car robot weighs about 3kg. The primary platform comes with an image recognition module, CCD stereo cameras, and wireless LAN capacity. The basic RoboCar model will cost just over $6000 USD. The RoboCar is intended to be used for verification of autonomous algorithm at the initial stage as well as for research on human-automobile interaction. Verification of obstacle avoidance algorithm will contribute to improving safety functions such as detection of pedestrians and vehicles and avoidance of collisions, according to ZMP.
