Facial scarification has its roots in tribal traditions. In theory, you should be able to determine which tribal group or clan the person belongs too. In some cultures, it is also considered a right of passage into adulthood with ash sometimes rubbed into the skin to increase scarring.
This background led scarification to become massively evolved and integrated as a main element of the global body modification movement. There are both modern and tribal body modifications in this post, with some really extreme versions that could make you feel queasy.
As an aside, I have also included an image of the massive hand print scar I found while scooting around BMEzine for the facial images.
