Format War is Over - R.I.P HD DVD (VIDEO)
It’s official. The Format War is over. HD DVD has been pronounced dead on Tuesday February 19, 2008. The move makes Blu-ray, backed by Sony Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and five major Hollywood movie studios, the winner in the battle over high-definition DVD formatting that began several years ago. Cessation of the player and recorders as well as volume production of HD DVD disk drives for PCs and games are targeted for March 2008.
Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation did said “We concluded that a swift decision would be best,” but that Toshiba will, “continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives.”
