Flipping through an old View-Master could occupy hours of time for children in the 90s, but now an updated version is coming for this retro virtual reality toy.

Mattel’s rebooted View-Master still maintains that old chunky, red and white plastic look, but now you can open a latch to reveal a cradle that lets you put in your Android or iPhone device to experience the toy in a completely new way.

The charming, retro virtual reality toy uses object recognition to use a phone's camera to see through the smoked plastic fascia. You just use the toy's image reel and the app recognizes which one is there and transports you to Alcatraz, among other locations. The device uses a 360-degree virtual view to take you to different locations and gives you their history. The view master takes this already established technology a notch up with its entertainment and educational implications.
