Renewable Energy Solution To Power The Entire World - Energy Islands
[Edit]
We’ve already seen the power of waves and the oceans current harnessed into useful electricity, and solar and wind almost seem like they have been around forever, however no one has really conjured up a way to utilize them all. Combining all of these technologies into one to create a floating “Energy Island” could just be the perfect equation to solve a whole lot more than efficiency.
Created by Jacques-Arsène d’Arsonval the concept design would hypothetically produce 250MW from one hexagonal shaped “Energy Island” and it is predicted that 50,000 of them would be enough to supply the entire world with energy.
As well as using wind, solar and waves to created electricity the islands would also contain a new technique that would not only produce electricity, but as one of it’s by products from the procedure would create two tons of fresh water per person, per day to quench the thirst of the entire worlds population. The new technique is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), explained by Inhabitat: “warmer surface water is used to heat liquid ammonia, converting it into vapor, which expands to drive a turbine — which in turn produces electricity. The ammonia is then cooled using cold water from the ocean depths, returning it into a liquid state so the process can start all over again.”
The “Energy Island” is set to be unveiled at Richard Branson’s Virgin Earth Challenge later this year, that is being held to come up with the most innovative solutions to combat global warming.
