While the Red Bowl art installation is quite stunning in its measured simplicity, a somber element is present due to the inspiration behind the piece. It pays tribute to the lepers in medieval times, many of whom were treated at the Maladrerie Saint-Lazare in Beauvais, France, where the Red Bowl art installation was constructed.
Designed by Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot, the co-founders of Cao | Perrot Studio, a bicontinental creative studio based in Los Angeles and Paris, the Red Bowl art installation is made up of 5,000 black rods that are adorned with red glass domes. Ranging in heights, the metallic pillars form the shape of a bowl, hence its name.
The significance of the Red Bowl art installation is the fact that lepers would take a literal blood bath in hopes it would cure their disease.
