Hacking IKEA is part of the month-long FreeDesigndom 2008 celebration, featuring design and fashion in the Netherlands. September 10th marked the opening of the first of what will become an annual occasion.

FreeDesigndom encourages designers to get creative with products from the Swedish furniture and home accessories manufacturer and re-invent them into fun, new pieces.

Lovis Caputo and Sarah Kueng converted the iconic blue IKEA shopping bag into wild, puffy blue shorts, complete with suspenders and a compartment for a dog.

Daniel Saakes created atom-like chandeliers from multiple LAMPAN light.

Kierin Jones made the flatpack ‘GUNN’ and a bow from what looks like wooden clothes hangers, and IKEA pencils in place of arrows.

Other fun reincarnations include planters from carrying bags, jewelery from assembly tools, a low budget funeral set from a bookcase and lamps made from the boxes lights came in.
