When cocaine was just hitting the fashionable circles, it was chic to wear a razor blade to show that one was among the coke “elite." Now the goth/punk/emo crowd has adopted the double edge razor blade as a sign of suicide, hurting yourself, and living on the edge. Blades as fashion is bleeding back into the mainstream. The blades are showing up as pendants, bracelets, and earrings.

Implications - These razor blade accessories demonstrate how certain products obtain new meaning when moved throughout various social circles. Companies can take advantage of these patterns and take an overused commodity then reinvent it to appeal to an alternative social group.
