Jack-O-Lantern Plans May Be Squashed With Shortage

Wet weather, the accompanying lack of sun, and increase in destructive mildew has created a Halloween pumpkin shortage across the Southeast and Eastern Midwest U.S. this year. Growers have had to choose between offering their meager yields as carving pumpkins or as pumpkins to be canned for pies. Many are choosing to give kids a more fun Halloween by selling whole pumpkins to the public.

This may continue to be a problem come Thanksgiving when traditional pumpkin pies are in high demand. Luckily pumpkins grown in other states and Canada may be able to relieve the eastern pumpkin shortage, but prices will most certainly be higher.
