Personal Wine Testing Robot

Not so sure how to test wines? How about getting a robot for that! Officially recognized by the Guinness Book of world records, Prof. Atsushi Hashimoto’s team at Mie University and Osaka-based NEC System Technologies Ltd have designed the first ever sommelier robot. This cute creation uses science to test wines for you.  The 40-centimeter-tall robot can determine the type of wine, and varieties of ingredient grapes, by holding a sensor built into its hand over the bottle. In developing the robot, Hashimoto, professor of Bioinformation and Food Engineering, and his team focused on how different ingredients in wine absorb infrared light at different wavelengths. Although it had been considered difficult to develop an electronic sensor capable of tasting wine, which is largely constituted of water and alcohol, the team succeeded in developing an infrared sensor that can identify a wine's type by irradiating it at various wavelengths.
