Enduring Icons Are Few - Peace Symbol Has Been Around for 50 years. (GALLERY)

Aside from religious symbols, only the swastika and the peace symbol are more widely recognized. There is a certain irony there. The peace symbol will be 50 years old this week. It was designed by Gerald Holtem to represent the semaphore signal for N (Nuclear) D (Disarmament.) As with most symbols popularized, various governments have tried to ban it’s display.
