Apartment dwellers no longer have to face the dilemma of giving up their beloved apartment when they have outgrown it.  They can just add on!  A room addition from Convertible City, known as the Rucksack House, is a new option.  A room sized cube, it can be suspended on the outside of existing buildings via steel cables to provide additional living or working space.  The unit includes fold-down furniture, such as a desk, shelves, and a place to sleep or read.  When stowed, the furniture is held in place by hidden magnets. And for those with no fear of heights, it also includes a window in the floor to look down on the activity below.

The Rucksack house offers a way of improving housing quality on an individual basis. It is a direct visual sign and reactivates the idea of the self-built anarchistic tree house, but one that is more prominently placed and structurally engineered. New space gets slung onto an existing space by a simple, clear, and understandable method. (convertiblecity.de)
