 Top 5 Celebs, Oprah Winfrey Leads With $50 Million to Charity Posted: Sep 15, 08 Comments: 2 Views: 1,236 The highest paid TV celebrity, Oprah Winfrey, has been named the Most Generous Celebrity for the second year in a row, at the end of a year which saw her donate a staggering $50 million. According to The Giving Back Fund, a group that encourages philanthropy, the star’s charities spent $50.2m (£28m) in 2007 on health and education initiatives. Others at the top of the list include trumpeter Herb Alpert, Barbra Streisand, Paul Newman and Mel Gibson. Hollywood couple Jolie and Pitt were ranked at number six, donating $8.4 million through their foundation, which funds things like the reconstruction of hurricane-ravaged New Orleans as well as provides refugee aid and cross cultural understanding. According to The Giving Back Fund, the Most Generous Stars are: 1. Oprah Winfrey - $50.2m (£28m) 2. Herb Alpert - $13m (£7.2m) 3. Barbra Streisand - $11m (£6.1m) 4. Paul Newman - $10m (£5.6m) 5. $50 million from Oprah, is like me tossing a dollar in a convenience store bucket. It is not uncommon for people to tithe 15% annually to their church. In Oprah's case, that would be $225 million. Get back to me when she does that annually. |
