Nike has been in the media for good and bad this week. First off, the Nike Air Stab had to be recalled because it has been attributed to stabbings, or at least thought to coincide with a rise in teen stabbings in the UK. They were launched as a limited edition two years ago featuring an old school design from a 1988 Nike shoe.

Oddly enough, it could have been worse! The slogan for the retro-designed shoes is “Runnin’ ‘n’ Gunnin!”

Will Nike have to recall the all-weather Pocketknife shoe soon too?

The more positive news? Nike is collaborating with the US military; they have designed an ultra light weight boot using the Nike Free sole, created for the Special Forces.

A spokesman for Nike said the name was not a reference to knives but had become an "unfortunate coincidence" given the surge in knife-related crimes. He explained the shoe was first launched in 1988 as a stability running shoe, which is where the word "stab" was derived from in the product's name. He said: "We completely reject the idea that we are in any way condoning or encouraging the issue of knife usage. "At any given time, Nike has thousands of shoes in the market, each with an individual name - it would be impossible to name them all based on future assumptions about news stories. Given the current climate, however, we have withdrawn the shoe from our Nike Town store." (brandrepublic)
