Photographer Nicolas Silberfaden has created a striking series that showcases superheros in a very unconventional light. The portrait series is called The Impersonators, and was created to express the "current economic, social and cultural crisis in The United States of America today," according to The Laughing Squid.

When we think of superheroes, we generally see them as strong, inspirational and tough characters. In Silberfaden's series however, they're anything but that, and the expressions on their face show it. They all look incredibly sad and broken down. The models he used for the series were actually celebrity and character impersonators he found around Los Angeles, California.

The contradictory ideas in the series definitely make it worth checking out. Stats for Sad Superhero Portraits Trending: Older & Warm
