A new device being offered-up by Texas Instruments, a company mostly known for its calculators and computer chips, could re-shape the way we think about voice communication. NewScientist has recently reported on it, calling it a neckband that translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals. At the 2008 TI Developer Conference in Dallas, representatives from Texas Instruments demonstrated the device by making the first ever voiceless cell phone call. A video shows one representative calling the other’s cell phone using the device during a presentation to the press. With a total recognizable word-base of around 150, the device won’t be replacing the human voice box anytime soon. However, the opportunities for this type of technology may be vast. What hearing aids can do for the deaf, this device may do for the mute. References: technology.newscientistFiled In: |
