Backed with $75 million in US Department of Energy smart grid demonstration grants, American Electric Power is starting a first in the country large-scale distributed battery storage project.

The project will bring smart energy systems to about 110,000 AEP customers in Ohio. Part of the project is the installation of 25-kilowatt lithium-ion neighborhood batteries to reduce strain from peak power load demands.

Detroit Edison will make similar installations near Detroit. The development of smart grid technology is essential to making progress toward distributed power and clean energy independence.

Neat! I wonder if this will coincide with the Chevy Volt's extended-range electric vehicle plans for 2010.

That would be a jolt for the Volt that makes sense! Michigan has designed and is promoting an amazing array of emerging green energy clusters in part to bring some of the lagging economic clusters into the 21st century.

Not sure what this is about. The photograph shows a 1 MW battery, but the AEP website talks about community energy storage of about 100 kW. Can anyone explain?

The photos illustrate the overall concept. Since the project is not yet constructed photos of it are not yet available.
