Conservation International and World Wildlife Fund in conjunction with Cambodian wildlife officials discovered the nearly extinct soft-shell turtle nesting in abundance in the area of Cambodia’s Mekong River. This endangered species can grow 6 feet long and weigh 110 lbs. when mature and can bite down to the bone. Cambodian conservationists are developing a strategy to protect the turtle’s nesting grounds and protect it from being poached by neighboring Vietnam, where the turtle is considered a delicacy.
(At least this species can’t be smuggled out of the country in anyone’s underwear).
