Nail art: it was cool before it became trendy, but not half as creative. More than a year’s worth of trending regularly on Tumblr and Instagram has given manicurists, professional and hobbyist, the chance to showcase the immense scope of art that can be expressed on such a tiny canvas as a set of fingernails.
“Who knew what could be accomplished with some nail polish, toothpicks, and a great deal of patience?”

In honor of the first International Nail Art Day (August 3, 2013), here is a sampling of the explosive nail-art phenomenon that has long since escaped the fashion sphere. The days when jeweled studs or multicolored fingernails were the quirkiest a manicure could get are of the past. It’s not just the scenic art pieces done in miniature, although these are remarkable enough; it’s also the incredible tributes paid to pop culture and literary legends, past and present, everything from Betty Boop to Breaking Bad to David Bowie to Lord of the Rings.

If you’re in search of more original looks for your nails, check out the slideshow’s featured blogs and the #nail-art hashtag on both Tumblr and Instagram for instant inspiration. Stats for In Honour of International Nail Art Day Trending: Older & Chilly
