The pea has taken some heat lately, especially following the New York Times's controversial suggestion to add the vegetable to guacamole, but this mushy peas dish might be more appetizing. Available from fish and chips restaurant L'Alba D'Oro in Edinburgh, the mushy pea fritters are essentially deep fried balls of mashed green peas.

Mushy peas are a well-known side dish in the UK that hasn't really made it over stateside. Instead of coming in a lump, this shop serves the veggie in a way that patrons might feel looks more appetizing.

This follows on the heels of many food bloggers who are taking a variety of unusual foods to the deep fryer, from pasta to bacon and unusually stuffed donuts.
