During my last job hunt, I discovered a growing trend in Corporate America called Six Sigma, a methodology developed by Motorola during the 1980s that has now become an industry standard and is causing an impressive cultural change.

Normally, when I float my resume, I get job descriptions (requisitions) from recruiters representing Fortune 500 companies on the East Coast containing the normal skill set requirements and knowledge of applications. However, within the last six months, I noticed a new trend on their requirements list with many references to “knowledge of Six Sigma.” After researching the topic, I decided to share this information with Trend Hunter readers, who are seeking more information on this growing trend.

Motorola claims that it has “documented more than $16 Billion in savings as a result of its Six Sigma efforts.”

Six Sigma is a methodology that provides businesses with the tools to improve the capability of their business processes. This increase in performance and decrease in process variation leads to defect reduction and vast improvement in profits, employee morale and quality of product. Motorola developed this new standard and created the methodology and needed cultural change associated with it. Six Sigma helped Motorola realize powerful bottom-line results in their organization - in fact, they documented more than $16 Billion in savings as a result of our Six Sigma efforts. According to the Six Sigma Academy, Black Belts save companies approximately $230,000 per project and can complete four to 6 projects per year. General Electric, one of the most successful companies implementing Six Sigma, has estimated benefits on the order of $10 billion during the first five years of implementation. GE first began Six Sigma in 1995 after Motorola and Allied Signal blazed the Six Sigma trail. Since then, thousands of companies around the world have discovered the far reaching benefits of Six Sigma. (isixsigma)
