Based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Molasses Books is a unique used bookstore that provides a more energizing exchange for merchandise other than cold, hard cash. Molasses Books trades pre-owned novels for a hot cup of coffee instead. A refreshing change from traditional retail, this bookstore not only promotes a fun business model, it also encourages conversation and community.
Founded by Matthew Winn, Molasses Books is a treasure trove for fiction, nonfiction, art and photography books. Intimate, light and open, it can accommodate about a dozen people to sit and read. Winn is currently applying for a tavern license as well to allow for exchanges of wine and beer in the near future.
While there isn't an exact science to the swaps just yet, Molasses Books gives "about a third of the resale value in cash, or a little more for trade or a tab at the bar," according to Brokelyn.
